Sambas
Gateway to Sarawak
Sambas
is a town divided in two parts due the river. At the
harbor at the riverside goods are load and unload. The houseboats remind such as
at all other places in West Kalimantan at the time the people
were depend on the rivers. In the past, when there were no roads, all
transportation was done over the river highways.
Sambas offer beautiful traditional handicraft products,
and also some historical remains as the Sultan palace
of the Sambas kingdom, which was built by the first ruler Sultan
Muhammad Syaefuddin. Two cemeteries of the Sambas kingdom can
be found at separated complexes. One of Sultan Abubakar and
the other of Sultan Muhammad Syaefuddin.
A bit out of Sambas town you can find Lake Sebedang which is Surrounded
by beautiful green hills, and is a perfect place to relax with Lodge
facilities for overnights.
The waterfall of Sanggau Ledo, better known as the Berasap waterfall,
is quite impressive and a visit worth for those who have some time.
Stones in curious shapes are found at Tampenan village and are the
subject of many legends. Among them is one in the shape of a house,
with guests sitting on the floor, and all turned into stone.
The Tebas district has large oranges
plantations along the road from Pemangkat to Sambas.
In this region the sweet "Pontianak oranges" are grown.
Paloh Beach lies in the Paloh district, and is a popular
tourist resort. During low tide, the beach is about 20 meters wide.
During high tide, one can touch the water with one's foot while sitting
at the edge of the beach. Many turtles lay their eggs there, living
along the shore.
Bengkayang
is strategically located town in Sambas regency, and
just about 20 kilometers northeast of Pontianak city. Bengkayang
connects cities in-to the West Kalimantan hinterland and the
route into Sarawak, a journey in-to East Malaysia begins in Bengkayang.
