Marabahan along the Barito River
The Marabahan region stands out as a special place for hiking due to its network of villages that are linked by trails winding through largely untouched forests. These trails offer a unique opportunity for visitors to explore the area and even stay overnight in the local villages. The people living there are self-reliant, growing their own food and making use of hunting to add to their meals. They hunt using either handmade rifles or by working with groups of dogs and spears. Although they have enough food and live in decent homes, earning money is challenging because the villages are far from towns and markets. Despite this, all the villagers share a strong belief in preserving the forest and welcoming more tourists to visit the area.
