Dayak Community Longhouses of Borneo
A Dayak longhouse is a type of community house that can be as long as 100 to 200 meters, and it serves as the main gathering place for dozens of families, effectively acting as the heart of the village. The artistic designs of these longhouses vary from one tribe to another. Some are especially remarkable and feature bright, colorful patterns, while others showcase elegant, flowing geometric shapes that depict scenes from the jungle wildlife. These designs often show influences from the Chinese Dong Son culture. Despite the differences in their artistic styles, the actual structure of the longhouses is quite similar. They are built on sturdy wooden posts that are raised about 2 to 3 meters above the ground to protect them from flooding. The entire structure is designed as a communal home for a single tribe, with separate living quarters for each family. There is also a public area in the front, which is a long, central corridor that serves as a shared space for the whole community.
