Dayak Culture & Longhouse Tanjung Isuy
Tanjung Isuy is a small village inhabited by the Benuaq Dayak Tribe, situated near Jempang Lake, which is the largest lake located downstream of the Mahakam River. The village features an original traditional longhouse that is open to visitors, offering the chance to stay overnight in a comfortable accommodation that reflects the standard Indonesian style.
In Tanjung Isuy Dayak village, women can be seen skillfully weaving ulap doyo, a traditional type of free-fiber cloth that is unique to this region.
Tourists can also have the opportunity to see guardian statues and the grave of a Benuaq king, which are significant cultural landmarks. Being the closest Dayak village to Samarinda along the Mahakam River, this area offers a glimpse into the lifestyle of the local community. Visitors can also observe floating houses on Lake Jempang, which act as a natural water buffer for the Mahakam River. A typical example of such a village is Jantur, where the majority of the residents belong to the South Kalimantan Banjarese tribe. The village is known for its colorful and traditionally styled buildings, making it a worthwhile stop for travelers passing through.
Further upstream from Tanjung Isuy, there is a grand old longhouse in Mancong. However, fewer tourists visit the longhouses of Pentat and Lembunah, which are located along the Ohong River. The Ohong Creek, which runs through a tunnel of lowland forest, is home to a variety of wildlife, including different species of birds, iguanas, and bekantan, also known as proboscis monkeys, who can often be spotted in the trees along the river.
