Derawan Island covers a total area of 40,000 hectares and is a maritime protected area known for its stunning natural beauty and beautiful beaches. It is home to several rare species of plants and animals, including scaled turtles, belimbing turtles, and sea cows.
The island is inhabited by the Bajau people, who live in their traditional villages, including stilt houses built directly on the water.
The Derawan Sea Gardens are incredibly beautiful, while the white sandy beaches and coastal forests are filled with wildlife such as sea birds, iguanas, and swallows. There are also caves that are home to various types of crabs.
The waters around Derawan are perfect for a variety of water activities, including swimming, fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling, and other water sports.
The surrounding seas are rich in marine life, with creatures like flamboyant cuttlefish, squat lobsters, ghostpipe fish, blue-ring octopuses, nudibranchs, seahorses, ribbon eels, and scorpionfish.
Rabu-Rabu Island is a small island located near Derawan and is also known as Snake Island.
Other nearby islands include Sangalaki, Maratua, and Kakaban, which is famous for its freshwater lakes.

The Island is reachable from Tanjung Redep / Berau.
