Berau Orangutan Wildlife Rain Forest & Authentic Dayak Tribe

Berau is a sub region of East Kalimantan, and is natural heritage biodiversity, the Derawan archipelago as a paradise sea and beach archipelago for the underwater world lovers with great snorkel and dive spots. The Jungle of Berau is unknown and unexplored sofar, but is the largest diverse of it's kind at Borneo island, with 52 mammalian species,  118 bird species, 18 bat species, 12 amphibian species, several reptiles such as lizards  and 45 tree species. This forest has 39 species of feeding trees for primates, notably orangutans, and nesting trees.
The diversity is noticeable in the high populations of rare flora and fauna such as orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus mario), gibbons (Hilobates moulleri), sun bears (Helarctos malayanus), proboscis monkeys (Nasalir larvatus) and various plants like ironwood (Eusideroxylon zwagerii), bangkirai (Shorea laevis), agatis (Agathis), kapur ( Dryobalanops sp), kruing (Dyptherocarpus confertus), rattan (Calamus sp), forest durian (Durio), and forest rambutan (Cuponiopsis sp).
Berau is home to unique plants as the tampar-tampar hantu plant, which means “slapping a ghost” (Sindora wallichii).
The orangutan population is one of the largest populations of Orangutans in an area at Kalimantan, Berau has therefor declared several regions as a protected rain forest zone due of it's large orangutan population to be conserved.
The Dayak tribes, live a traditonal way of hunting, fishing, dry farming, collecting honey, gaharu (fragrant resin) from the jungle, and bird nests found in limestone caves of Lesan Karst. The main infrastructure channel into the area is the Lesan River, a muddy river as one of the main streams connecting the forest with the villages and give access to the outside world.

Day 02: MERASA ORANGUTAN JUNGLE TREK, BENUA BARU DAYAK VILLAGE, BERAU (BL)

Simple Breakfast at local guesthouse Merasa, before we head up to the Lesan River, to catch a motor-canoe upstream for about 2 hours, you will enjoy the scenery of the river banks filled with tranquil greenery of lowland and towering dipterocarps trees which remark as the start of getting into the dark Borneo Jungle, during the cruise you might spot various wildlife from otters, monkeys to birds species. Visit Pulau Bawan as the Orangutan Island in the Lesan River, afterwards a short jungle trek, upon the field condition, possibility to the waterfall, old Dayak grave and limestone cave. Late morning return by canoe to Merasa village to continue by car for about 1 hour to Benuaq Baru Dayak Kayan village, The Dayak arts of Benua Baru are extra ordinary and vibrant designs, statutes and the characteristic flowing geometrical used in portraying scenes of jungle life comes from Chinese and Vietnamese Dong Son influences.
